Do you know the difference between an ERV and HRV?
HRV or Heat Recovery will transfer the energy (heat) from where it is to where its missing. In other words, warm air moving in 1 direction will cross with cooler air moving in the opposite direction. In the winter, its the warm exhaust air preheating the cold outside air coming in. Conversely, the cool air conditioned air will pre-cool the hot outside air coming in. ERV, or Energy Recovery will also recover the latent moisture of those air paths. In the case of winter months where there is no humidifier, there is no difference in performance. However, in the case of cooling where you are dehumidifying while cooling, the ERV will help the HVAC by transferring the temperature and humidity components of the air.
Some technologies are only available HRV. Is that okay? Any level of recovery beats none. The only technology that has 0.000% cross transfer will be Heat recovery as the water molecules in theory can transfer the gas/virus/undesired materials you are exhausting. Additionally, in the northeast, there is more heating hours than cooling hours. Another advantage of HRV technology typically is its easier to clean.
What are the technologies and what are the advantages/disadvantages?
Energy Recovery Wheel: Most common and for a reason! It typically has the smallest footprint and a very high effectiveness (rate of recovery). Tends to have the highest cross transfer rate; the amount of air from the exhaust stream getting back into the supply. According to ASHRAE 62.1 Addendum Y, Class 1 or Class 2 space (standard office/school space and locker rooms and bathrooms) allow 10%, 5% cross transfer which is not a problem with wheels. class 3,4,5- paint booths, infectious disease, etc, this technology cannot be used. Additionally, being its a wheel, you are constrained by its dimension- a challenge in many indoor situations. Energy Recovery wheels are either an aluminium strand wheel with small slits and fluted columns to move the air and water vapor from one
stream to the next. Less expensive wheels utilize a plastic with a silicon gel which will transfer the sensible and latent capacities. Learn More
Aluminium Plate and Enthalpy Core Units: Competitive to about 2500 cfm, Aluminium Sheets criss-cross the inlet/outlet air stream for HRV or water permeable plates do the same for ERV Functions. Typically sold as a full ventilator with direct drive PSC or ECM Motors. Learn More
Heat Pipe: Heat Pipes utilize a series of tubes in a coil casing filled with refrigerant which migrate back and forth transferring heat. Technically no moving parts and no cross transfer, this technology offers the most flexibility. You can adjust the Length, Width, Height, Fins and Rows to Customize performance, size and price point. Have You Seen This? The United Cool Air Alpha Air Unit. A Unique Approach for providing an all Indoor Approach providing the usual OA/EA/RA/SA (Outside, Exhaust, Return, Supply Air Connections), but provides neutral dehumidified air 365 days a year using a compressor as an air cooled heat pump! Dual Core Technology: Relatively New to the US, it has been around for decades, the dual core technology utilizes 2 metallic plates which “charge” and” discharge energy” by diverting air into a “Block A” or “Block B” to have the worlds best effectiveness of near 90%! Every 30 seconds a servo motor will rotate 90 degrees to change the air path and each damper is 1 piece, minimizing moving parts and increasing reliability. Because the plates are seeing air move in opposite directions, this heat exchanger self cleans and self defrosts by default. Imagine in the winter (0F) where you exhaust 70F air and supply 67F! This technology is available as HRV or ERV (with adding a desiccant to the plates). This unit can be on its own or part of a complete HVAC Unit. Learn More
