Desiccant Dehumidification is recommended whenever the space requires a lower dew point than what Mechanical Dehumidification can achieve as they do cost more. Desiccant dehumidifiers have a lot of flexibility as they can range from 50 cfm, 1#/hour (29 pints/day) on up. Units can be dehumidification only or a complete package (including primary heat, cool, filtration, even Humidifiers!).
The Heart of Desiccant Dehumidifiers is the Rotor; it requires a heat source to regenerate the wheel for constant performance. The desiccant wheel dehumidifier can be regenerated by Electric Heat, Natural Gas (Direct Fired or Indirect fired), or Steam. Typically electric is used for smaller units, and gas is used for larger industrial desiccant dehumidifiers. We can even use refrigerant heat with DEX/DX technology.

How It Works:
For a commercial desiccant dehumidifier unit, a small refrigeration circuit is used to essentially precool the air which reduces the entering air dry bulb but increases the RH. The wheel removes the moisture and slightly heats the air in the process (but the air was precooled!) and this results in dry neutral air (75 DB, 40 dew point/~30%RH). The condenser coil in this case becomes the heat source to regenerate the wheel. This is a very effective means to dehumidify. We call this DES/DX technology and its available from 300 cfm, 8#/hour
