The NovelAire DES/DX technology allows a DX coil to precool and saturate incoming air to allow the desiccant wheel to be most effective and efficient. The condenser heat is used on the regeneration side to dry the wheel using the heat of rejection as the engine to dehumidify. The result is 40 dewpoint air, at roughly the same entering air temperature. perfect for comfort and a large share of industrial process and storage.
NovelAire provides complete packages to accommodate a buildings temperature humidity control from 300-10000 cfm. For smaller units (such as process rooms or small storage facilities) we have mated a DES/DX300 with an inline duct mounted electric heater and humidifier and tied to a single controller with common temperature and humidistat sensors. With a simple relay, we can jog the wheel off to allow the system to provide 9000 btu of cooling without adding a separate condensing unit and coil (contact us for additional details and limitations).
At 1000 cfm and higher, the above can be all factory installed in a modular package. Primary heat options include indirect gas, steam, hot water and electric. Units can do 100% outside air with Novel Aire’s own molecular sieve wheel for energy recovery or if preferred, we can do with mechanical pre-cooling. Note, the unit would have the ability to do Cooling only, dehumidification only or cooling with dehumidification (in other words we can control both the dew point and the dry bulb without requiring “preference” which is a common challenge to hot-gas reheat systems).
As the world looks to lower energy usage, consider using a DES/DX ERV unit for the DOAS. By lowering the dewpoint with a dedicated unit designed to absorb moisture efficiently, you are allowing incremental units which are very efficient at sensible loads to hum. You may be able to reduce the cost of construction by lowering the nominal capacity of the recirculating units or in the case of a VRF, increase diversity knowing that the level of comfort will rise when you maintain a lower relative humidity in the space. Additionally, unlike a hot-gas reheat system, you are not adding sensible heat only to be removed later by the recirculating units.
Show me the Money! (IE Energy Savings)
Take an example of a 30×30 classroom. The code would require approximately 300 cfm of outside air (.12/kid, assuming 20; .12 cfm per sqft). The approximate load in the space is 4 tons. Using DES/DX technology, 9000 BTU will produce approximately 8 MBH (8# h20) of Latent capacity. Assuming a conventional HVAC unit has a .8 Sensible heat ratio, you would need 3.5 tons to acheive. By using DES/DX technology, you’re allowing the recirculating HVAC unit to do almost all sensible. As a result, your discharge temperature will lower or you can use a smaller unit to acheive the same discharge. Combine an ERV (which has a 50% SHR) and you just reduced the required compressor even more! To prove to yourself, pick any unit and do selections at 80/67 (which equates to ~25% of 97/75 oa with 75/63 return) and drop the entering air to 45% rh of the return (75/61 as an example). It works!
