When the weather gets cold outside, the humidity inside will drop. Lower humidity creates static electricity issues, can dry out a building content (and your skin) as well as decrease overall comfort in the space. A commercial humidification system can help to regulate the humidity in your entire building or specific dedicated spaces.
Applications that require commercial humidifiers include:
- Commercial Spaces with large Outside Air Requirements
- Hospitals & Healthcare facilities
- Museums
- Data Centers
- Storage
- Cultivation and Growth facilities
- Areas with a lot of high end wood (floors, furniture)
- Paper Mills
- Electronics
Considerations for Choosing the Right Commercial HVAC Humidifier:
Lets face it, low cost is typical, and it should be fine in most cases. This article is written unbiased as we carry many low first cost options. But, knowing all options will show in some cases first cost gets minimalized when considering maintenance, precision, water management and energy usage of your commercial humidifier. While we have it all laid out for you in our WHITE PAPER, this is an abbreviated way to help you decide.
- Canisters– lowest first cost and somewhat simple to swap out; not precise and uses more water and replacement canisters are expensive
- Resistive type- “Permanent” stainless steel barrel that gets cleaned. Neptronic offers a cost effective, easy to clean model where precision and water management is ideal. Units can be Electric or run with natural gas for lower operating cost. Units can be mounted indoors or outdoors!
- Steam to Steam– AKA, “clean steam” humidifiers, if you cannot use boiler steam (as the caustic chemicals used to maintain the boiler ultimately get into the vapor), this device will take super saturated steam and exchange with water to boil and create steam in another path. Good for precision and requires routine cleaning. A “ZERO condensate option” is available. CALL US!!!
- Steam Injection- Use house steam, as opposed to a local steam generator, to directly inject steam into the air
- Ultrasonic– Mechanical (as opposed to boiling the water); instant on as you don’t wait for the boil and very precise without wasting water. Very energy efficient. Will require water treatment
- Adiabatic– Otherwise known as “Foggers” a larger scale mechanical means of introducing the humidity in the air. Also efficient and needing of water treatment. Absolutely perfect for spaces that have high sensible heat load (like data centers) as it will drop the temperature in the space while increasing the humidity.
All commercial humidifier units are available with Integral BMS capability (BACnet, Modbus and Lon)!
Steam Distribution- Choosing the Right Humidifier, “Part 2”
The humidifier typically has 2 main components- the Generator and the Distributor. The generator creates the steam and the distributor will disperse it. The above essentially explained the generator, but some consideration must be made on the generator:
- Our distributors will always be sized right for your duct. You must let us know the Width, Height and how much straight length the duct has for us to lay out the most proficient and least costly option. While the LxW is common sense, for Canisters, Resistive, Steam to steam and Direct Steam injections, the shorter the duct length, the less room there is for the plume (white cloud) to be fully absorbed, so as a result we will go from a single pass wand to a multitube manifold which adds cost. Also let us know should the distributor be mounted vertically so it can be built accordingly
- Distributors can be insulated in order to maintain temperature. While in most cases a little extra heat does not create any issue, should there be a precise process, adding up to 4F to the space may be an issue, so let us know. For Direct Injection, tubes can be jacketed, meaning its a tube within a tube, allowing an air gap to also insulate which bumps the units precision & performance.
- Ultra-sonic and Fogger humidifiers will always require more distance to absorb; it’s part of the science. There is not a short distance option ever available!
- If you don’t have room for the duct, consider a Fan Pack unit!
- Consider that many of our boiling humidifiers have drain cooling inside as a standard option! when you boil water into steam, the condensate is 212F which is too hot for modern PVC drains. by cooling the steam with incoming house water with an internal heat exchanger, we are able to assure 140F goes into the drain.
Remember… The steam and condensate lines should be as short as possible and ALWAYS PITCH DOWN!
